Triathlon FAQs

Q. Can girls under 18-years-of-age race?
A. There is no set age requirement. That said, we do ask that guardians can guarantee without a doubt that the minor can complete the course. Racing on a relay team is a great way to include minors.

Q. Can boys under 18-years-of-age race?
A. No. Sorry, it’s an all-woman event.

Q. Can my friends and family come watch?
A. Absolutely! The more the merrier. Tell them to come fully equipped to cheer you on with noisemakers like cow bells and whistles. And it’s totally OK to cheer on other athletes, too. In fact, it’s encouraged.

Q. How do I sign up to volunteer?
A. We love you already! We always need help cheering, directing athletes, working the water stops and handing out metals to finishers. To find out more or sign up go to Volunteer Info

Q. How do I get there by BART?
A. The Dublin/Pleasanton BART station is a convenient 20-minute bike ride from Shadow Cliffs. From BART, go southeast on Owens Dr. toward Rosewood Dr. (0.59mi) Turn LEFT onto W Las Positas Blvd. (0.19mi) Turn RIGHT onto Santa Rita Rd. (1.10mi) Turn LEFT onto Valley Ave. (1.08mi) Turn LEFT onto Stanley Blvd. (0.34mi). Please give yourself ample time to arrive, check in and transition to the Start. And ride safe!

Q. How early should I arrive on race day?
A. The bane of our modern existence is traffic. And there will be lots of it on race day, so plan accordingly. Remember, you need to pick up your race packet (if you haven’t stopped by a See Jane Run store already), set up your transition area, fix your number and chip, warm up and get focused. Oh and don’t forget to have fun. The event opens at 6:00 for a reason – it’s a good time to arrive.

Q. Will there be water available on the cycling and running courses?
A. There are 4 water stops on the run course. We will not have water stops on the bike course. There is plenty of places to fill up water bottles at the park before your race.

Q. Should I sign up for the early (7:30 a.m.) start?
A. If you have special needs or do not feel you can complete the swim and cycling leg in 1.75 to 2.25 hours (cycling has a 10:15 a.m. cutoff), then you should start early. We are committed to having every participant finish and if starting early will help, we’re all for it. Otherwise, you will be starting in waves every four minutes. And your time will be recorded from the time you actually start. To request an early spot, contact the race director a events@seejanerun.com. Early starters are not eligible for prize purses.

Q. If a racer doesn’t finish the swim or bike, can she continue?
A. We understand that stuff happens. A swimmer may need a tow, or a bike breaks down, but if you’re not up to the next leg it’s best to swallow your pride and look toward next year. In order for a racer to be allowed to continue to the next leg without having finished the previous one, she must be judged fit and able to continue by the officials that pulled you from the race. Our biggest concern is for the safety of all racers. Races who do not complete the entire course will be ineligible for time-based prizes. If you fail to finish for any reason, See Jane Run will give you a free registration for next year.

Q. How long does the See Jane Run Triathlon last?
A. You can expect to finish the entire race in two to three hours. We’d love you to stay for the awards ceremony and post-race party. We do ask that fast finishers and spectators of fast finishers wait around until the race is over to avoid congestion on the road and in the transition area. Cheer your fellow athletes while you wait. They’ll love you for it.

Q. Will the waterslides be open?
A. Waterslides will be open unless the weather is not cooperating. You’ll find them across the parking lot from the transition area. Slides are under $10 to ride. Call 925-829-6230 for more details.

Swim

Q. How cold will the water be?
A. The water temperature in Shadow Cliffs Lake is 65° - 80° F degrees.

Q. Should I wear a wetsuit?
A. The water temperature is warm enough to not wear a wetsuit. However, many people don't just wear wetsuits for warmth, many wear them for buoyancy in the water. If you are accustomed to wearing one, you may want to bring it. If you would like to rent a one, stop by a See Jane Run store. You may want to call first to put yours on hold. We will probably run out for race day. Just make sure you have tried a wetsuit before race day. We never suggest anything new on the day of your race.

Q. Will there be lifeguards in the water?
A. There will be 18 lifeguards and 3 water buddies in the water watching over you in boats and on boards. You can not touch a lifeguard during a race unless you are in need of help and must be towed to shore. They take their job very seriously. Please do not argue with them if they have determined you unfit to finish the swim. We have also provided 3 race buddies to help you if you want to catch your breath without being pulled from the race. You can take as much time with the buddy as you want. Hang onto their board or boat and give yourself a break. They are there to support you in the race. If they determine your condition to be critical, they have the right to pull you from the race. If you are pulled from the swim, you can finish the race if you are deemed fit by an official.

Bike

Q. Will there be cars on the course?
A. Yes, the 11-mile loop will be on the roads with automotive traffic. However, the majority of the course will be in a coned-off bike. Local law enforcement and volunteers will monitor the entire route to help to keep you safe.

Q. Road or Mountain bike?
A. You don’t need a fancy-schmancy bike for an 11-mile loop. You’ll see all kinds of bikes on this leg. We recommend using a road bike because it’s faster and more efficient. A couple tips: Figure out how your bikes shifts before race day. Before loading your bike onto a bike rack shift to the lowest gear. The exit out of the park to the course is steep.

Run

Q. What kind of terrain can I expect on the run?
A. Most of the route is on packed dirt, with some pavement. The course is flat except for three short, steep hills (30-40 ft.).
